The Economic Abuse Evidence Cards were used as part of our UKFin+ participatory design project titled: Designing Out Economic Abuse in the UK Banking Industry (EP/W034042/1). The research team adopted a three stage participatory design model called Describe > Reflect > Make. The Economic Abuse Evidence Cards were used during the Describe stage of this process. During this session, participants described the problem of economic abuse in the banking context and played an active role in constructing the scope of the project. The Economic Abuse Evidence Cards supported this activity by enabling participants to review the existing evidence base.

To develop the cards, the research team conducted a literature review of what is known about banking technologies and economic abuse, collated the dominant themes, and refined the themes into five key areas: (1) joint products and services, (2) access to personal data, (3) holding perpetrators responsible, (4) digital banking features, and (5) (un)safe communications. We then produced five evidence cards per theme. Participants were invited to review the cards, and to add their thoughts to the virtual whiteboard, before discussing their thoughts with the whole group.
