The Economic Abuse "Safety By Design" Principles were used as part of our UKFin+ participatory design project titled: Designing Out Economic Abuse in the UK Banking Industry (EP/W034042/1). The research team adopted a three stage participatory design model called Describe > Reflect > Make. The Economic Abuse "Safety By Design" Principles were used during the Make stage of this process.

After participants had co-designed their intervention ideas, they were asked to select two ideas they felt were most important, and refine them using six "Safety By Design" principles, which the research team adapted from the work of Eva PenzeyMoog. The principles were designed to prompt participants to consider the key safety features of their ideas, and to adapt their ideas in response. The principles focus on: consent, control, human support, trauma-informed approaches, inclusion and safety.
