Slides from ORW session 2023:

What would Open Access look like in a system designed for arts and humanities-based research?

This event is an online discussion for researchers, students, technical and professional staff working in or with an interest in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. What issues are you facing when making your work open? How can we better support Open Access for our own researchers and the wider field?

The increase in publisher Open Access agreements with institutions has benefited researchers across many fields, including those where funds for Open Access have traditionally been scarce. While this increase in access to open publishing is welcome, it is still based on a system developed with sciences in mind.

  • Can we create an open culture which encompasses researchers both in and out of academia?
  • Can we move to a more open publishing system which does not discriminate against those who can't pay?
  • Can we invest in an open initiatives which would support the wider discipline?

Speaker:

Dr Alice Gibson. Independent researcher in environmental philosophy and Licensing Manager for JISC working on Open Access initiatives with smaller publishers. Dr Gibson will speak about her own experience publishing as an unaffiliated researcher and outline some if the initiatives aiming to make a more equitable transition to open.
