A summary of the work done so far on a student journals project at Northumbria University.

Students attain numerous benefits from involvement in academic publishing. Improving scholarship through experiential learning, increasing knowledge about the publishing process, and giving the opportunity to share work and ideas with a wide audience. At Northumbria we are exploring ways to provide students with an authentic learning experience through involvement in publishing as authors, reviewers and editors.

The library is developing Open Educational Resources on publishing and open research which can be used to improve student’s knowledge. We are also exploring the use of the Northumbria Journals system, to provide publishing opportunities for modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level, enabling students to learn through experience of the publishing process.

In this session the library team will outline the ways in which Library supported publishing is being trialled as a digital learning tool at Northumbria University. We will demonstrate emerging flexible learning tools being developed in partnership with academic staff, students and support staff, with which we intend to pilot key initiatives both inside and outside of the curriculum.

The session will also explain how the project creates opportunities to embed essential information literacies and open research practices earlier in the curriculum, for students at all levels.
